When to call for AC repair

Schedule a visit when cooling is weak, uneven, or gone — not after a week of running the unit with a frozen coil.

• Warm air from the vents while the outdoor unit runs
• Outdoor fan or compressor that will not start, hums, or trips a breaker
• Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil
• Water around the furnace/air handler from a backed-up condensate drain
• Short cycles: the AC starts, runs a few minutes, then stops without cooling the house
• Rooms on the second floor that stay hot while the thermostat is satisfied
• A thermostat that calls for cool with no response at the condenser

Before we arrive, safe checks only: Cool mode and a setpoint a few degrees below room temperature; filter not clogged; outdoor unit not buried in grass, cottonwood, or a winter cover that never came off. If the lines are iced, turn cooling off at the thermostat. Do not add refrigerant from a hardware-store can. If the charge is low, there is a leak.

What an AC visit looks like

The visit is a cooling diagnosis, then a repair you agree to.

1. Call. (330) 575-6440 — tell us whether the outdoor fan spins, whether there is ice, how long it has been off, and whether water is at the indoor unit.
2. Window. We schedule inside posted hours and tell you when we can be there. We will not invent an arrival time we cannot keep.
3. Indoor first. Thermostat, filter, blower, coil access, drain pan, float switch, and supply temperature. A lot of “bad compressors” are dirty filters, closed returns, or a drain that filled overnight.
4. Outdoor unit. Contactor, capacitor, fan motor, compressor amp draw, electrical connections, coil condition, and operating pressures when it is safe to run.
5. Findings, then approval. You hear which part or condition is causing the warm house, what a repair would do, and when replacement is the more honest path. After approved work, the system is restarted so supply air is actually cold and the drain is moving water.

Common AC problems

Capacitor and contactor failure. The outdoor unit hums, clicks, or sits dead on a hot afternoon. Start/run capacitors and worn contactors are among the most frequent summer repairs.

Iced coil and low airflow. A dirty filter, failing blower, or restricted indoor coil lets the evaporator freeze. Air then feels weak or warm. Thawing the ice without fixing airflow just ices it again.

Condensate drain backup. High humidity loads the drain. Algae or sludge blocks the line, the pan fills, and water shows up at the air handler — sometimes with a float switch that kills cooling until it is cleared.

Outdoor fan motor. Compressor on, fan off: head pressure climbs and the unit shuts down or cooks the compressor. We do not run a system that way “just to see.”

Low charge and leaks. Gauges that show low refrigerant are the start of the job, not the end. If the coil or compressor is leaking, we will not treat a top-off as a repair.

Thermostat and control wiring. A cooling call that never reaches the condenser looks like a dead AC. The visit proves whether the outdoor unit is even being asked to run.

Turn the system to off (not just a lower setpoint) so the ice can melt, change a packed filter if you have a clean one, and call for service. Running an iced coil can damage the compressor. Do not chip ice off the lines.
