When to call for furnace repair

Do not keep resetting a furnace that will not stay running. Call if you notice any of the following:

• The thermostat calls for heat and nothing runs — no inducer, no ignitor glow, no burner
• The furnace starts, clicks or whooshes, then shuts down (lockout)
• The blower runs, but register air is room-temperature or only slightly warm
• It heats for a few minutes, stops, then starts again (short cycling)
• A new squeal, rattle, or boom at startup
• Rooms farthest from the furnace never catch up, even with a recent filter change
• A burning-dust smell that does not clear after the first fall startup
• A thermostat that calls for heat while the unit stays silent

Gas odor: leave the house and call your gas utility from a safe location. A heating visit is not a substitute for a leak response. We can inspect the furnace after the line is declared safe.

Safe checks before we arrive (no tools): thermostat on Heat, set several degrees above room temperature, fresh batteries if it uses them; furnace switch on; filter not packed with dust. Do not jump safety switches or sand a flame sensor until it “works.” That masks the fault.

Stark County winters put long run times on aging furnaces. A small ignition or airflow fault in October often becomes a no-heat call in January.

What a furnace visit looks like

A repair visit is a diagnosis first, then a repair you approve.

1. Intake. Call or text (330) 575-6440. We ask what the furnace does (silent, tries and dies, blows cool, cycles). Brand and approximate age help if the data plate is readable.
2. Schedule. We book inside Monday–Friday 9–6 or Saturday 9–5 and tell you the window we can actually make.
3. On site. Thermostat and filter first, then the furnace: error codes, inducer, pressure-switch tubing, ignitor, flame sensor, gas valve, blower, limit switches, and condensate on high-efficiency units. Venting and combustion air are in scope, not only the last part that failed.
4. Plain-language findings. You get what failed, why it likely failed, and whether repair is sensible or replacement should be on the table. Work does not start until you agree.
5. Approved repair and heat cycle. After the fix, the system is run so you can feel air at the registers. If a part must be ordered, we leave the house safe and schedule the return.

Common furnace problems

Ignition and flame failure. Hot-surface ignitors crack. Flame sensors film over after a summer idle. Gas valves or pressure switches stop proving a safe fire. The furnace then locks out, often after three tries.

Short cycling. A dirty filter, blocked return, or overheating heat exchanger can make the furnace start and stop every few minutes. Rooms stay chilly even though the unit “runs.”

Blower and airflow. A failed blower motor, worn capacitor, or clogged filter starves the heat exchanger of air. Limit switches trip. Some rooms get heat; others do not.

Pressure switch or condensate on 90%+ furnaces. Condensing furnaces drain through a trap and hose. A clogged trap, frozen line in a cold garage, or a full condensate pump opens the pressure switch and looks like a dead furnace.

Thermostat and control. A miswired, weak-battery, or poorly placed thermostat can look like a dead furnace. The visit proves whether the furnace ever received a call for heat.

Heat-exchanger and age concerns. Older furnaces in Canton and Massillon housing stock can show cracked heat exchangers, rusted cabinets, or parts that are no longer sold. That is a replacement conversation, not a “one more part” conversation.
